Teaching Girls to Code

Since the start of term 3, SkillUp has been teaching to more than 300 girls from grades 3 to 6 at Rustenburg Girls' Junior School how to code.

The girls have been highly-engaged while learning to build their own websites using HTML and CSS, a foundational start to their coding journey.

Using our Teaching Kids to Code software, our team of expert tutors have been teaching these young woman to build their own websites. Each week, the girls have been building a website based on a variety of topics including: South Africa, Our Solar System, Geography, Finance, and, most recently, their own Wikipedia page on Famous Women in History.

It has been inspiring to see how much these 8 to 12 year-olds have learnt in the last two months.

The program is able to equip these girls with useful skills to help them navigate the ever-changing world of technology. Twelve year-old girls are already adding employable skills to their yet-to-exist CV’s! We've even had some parents tell us they want to learn what their kids are being taught.

Due to the nature of the curriculum, not only are we teaching them to code, but we're also incorporating other subjects like Science, History, Geography, and - without them even knowing it - Maths!

Currently, this is being implemented at Rustenburg Girls' Junior School, but soon any school or individual will be able to be a part of the coding revolution.
